Unique Toronto neighbourhoods: Kensington Market

What: Market
Where: hidden away behind Chinatown
When: anytime
$: Cheap

So you’re traveling to Toronto and you’ve found that great place to book a bed. Excellent. And now that you’re here, you need to check out what some of our many unique Toronto neighborhoods have to offer. With so many too choose from, let’s start with Kensington Market.

Kensington Market in Toronto (reminiscent of NYC’s SoHo) is one of our BoD fans favourite places to roam on weekends…or anytime really. It is truly the meeting place of the modern day hippie, artist, dread-lock musician and bohemian of any age and you’ll find it hidden behind the bustle that is Chinatown (just a teeny block west) between College St and Spadina Ave in downtown Toronto. And yes, also just a short jaunt west from your favourite Toronto hostel.

Kensington Market is vibrant – an area teeming with life and activity – and you’ll find some of the best bargains in the city. Whether wandering freely or people watching from a patio, you’ll be entertained and captivated.

So come spend the day and you’ll join in (or not) dancing to the pumping reggae while you check out the vintage shops and the artwork (of every form) found everywhere, sample from the colourful array of fruits & veggies available in the street stalls, and then – Jumbo Empanadas anyone? (you’ll find them off Augusta @ Baldwin) And don’t miss the cheese shops…and the meat shops…and the free trade coffee…

With such a great mix of old and new, young and old, and fresh made everything, you’ll be glad you made the trip!
