Lots of Canadians have a love-hate relationship with March. On one hand, it’s nice to see the days getting longer and the temperatures generally rising. On the other hand, flowers aren’t out yet and it’s still pretty wet and cold. Getting out and about is one way to make you feel a little better about spring’s upcoming arrival, and in March, Toronto steps up its offerings.
St Patrick’s Day
March’s iconic holiday, St. Patrick’s day, is celebrated with lots of flair in Toronto. The big draw, the parade, happened this year on the 14th. But the day itself, March 17, is the time to party. Toronto’s lucky to have a number of good Irish pubs, which are worth visiting even on a day when everyone’s not wearing green. Some to try:
Dora Keogh, a comfy, old-world feel with lots of live Celtic Music. 141 Danforth Ave in Greektown, (416) 778-1804.
Foggy Dew, which claims to “Foggy Dew meticulously harnesses all the traditions of Ireland to recreate a genuine Irish establishment.” Check their website for live music. 803 King St. West.
The Pour House offers cozy environment to get out of the chilly rain. Check their website for live music. 182 Dupont Ave.
There are many more, so be sure to ask around.
March Break
This week is “March Break” in Ontario public schools, so if you see lots of kids out and about, that’s why. Many museums and events cater to this yearly break by having extended hours and good deals.
Canada Blooms
If you’re in the mood to see a bit of horticultural life while it’s still a bit brown outside, check out Canada Blooms, a huge garden show at the Direct Energy Centre. The show runs from March 17-21 and features all the latest and trendiest plants and garden products. Tickets cost $16, students $14.
Sugar Bush
If you’re looking for a day trip, you might visit a quintessentially Canadian institution, a sugar bush. A sugar bush is a stand of maple trees that is used for harvesting sap and making maple products. The end of March is the time of year when the sap begins to flow and trees are tapped. Every Canadian family has their favorite sugar bush, so if you want to do this, ask for tips. A great sugar bush festival happens at the Wye Marsh Sweetwater Harvest March 27th and 28th. It’s about a two-hour drive from Toronto and features music, food and more.
Whatever you plan to do this March, if you are planning to do it in Toronto, make sure you stay at Backpackers on Dundas. Backpacking in Toronto doesn’t get any better than this.
