Live Music Venues in Toronto

Live music is something, along with great food and public spaces, that Toronto does really, really well. Whatever you’re into, Toronto will accommodate your musical fancy with ease and grace. We’ve listed a few of our favourite venues below, but, if you’re staying at Backpackers on Dundas, make sure to ask our helpful staff if you’re after something specific!

Horseshoe Tavern – if you haven’t had the chance to visit the Horseshoe Tavern yet, you’re in for a treat. Known affectionately as the ‘Shoe, this venue has many famous groups cross its stage en route to fame and fortune, perhaps most notably of all, The Rolling Stones. It’s been open for over 60 years (although it was known as Jack Starr’s Country Roots ‘n’ Rockabilly Tavern back in those days) and can be found at 370 Queen Street West. There’s a massive bar that’s always busy, but the staff know what they’re doing so it won’t ruin your night. All-in-all, an absolute must for any Toronto bound visitor.

Sneaky Dee’s – Consistently great for live music, Sneaky Dee’s is actually almost better known for its hangover-curing breakfasts and piled up nachos, all at a very affordable place. However, a word of warning, Sneaky Dee’s is grungy and busy – you’ll have an amazing night if you go with a bunch of easygoing mates, just don’t take your mum and expect to come away smiling.

The Rex – The Rex is many things to many people. To us, and hopefully to you, it’s one of Toronto’s best live jazz venues. The jazz bar is just a part of a hotel and restaurant, but this doesn’t lead to any hiking in prices, which makes a nice change. The Rex started attracting audiences in the late ‘80’s and has progressed to become the place to perform for all new and established jazz musicians. The venue is also a central part of the world-renowned Downtown Jazz Festival, attracting talent from far and wide to the busiest schedule of the whole event. Their motto says it all: “More Great Jazz than anywhere else, all the time!”n
